The Pennymore sisters (and brother) are the great core of this novel。 They are clever and bold。 Their dialogue snappy, their affection for each other palpable, and their struggles relatable。 It’s incredibly easy to root and care for them。 So much so that the muddy world-building (the workings of the kingdom are unclear) largely fades to the background。 Plus, there are plenty of unique, magical creatures and settings, exciting (though sometimes hard to follow) action, clever twists, and lessons a The Pennymore sisters (and brother) are the great core of this novel。 They are clever and bold。 Their dialogue snappy, their affection for each other palpable, and their struggles relatable。 It’s incredibly easy to root and care for them。 So much so that the muddy world-building (the workings of the kingdom are unclear) largely fades to the background。 Plus, there are plenty of unique, magical creatures and settings, exciting (though sometimes hard to follow) action, clever twists, and lessons about the importance of acceptance and learning。Unfortunately, the novel takes a long time to develop the plot。 The sisters don’t leave on their quest to save the kingdom from the evil sorcerer Dagamar until halfway through the book。 As such, the book stays stuck in second gear for a long while, and it’s hard to tell where exactly the plot is going。 Details pile up and become confusing because it’s not clear why they matter。 Some may find this intriguing and mysterious, but for middle-grade fiction—usually so streamlined and to the point—the book’s slow, sprawling start is particularly notable。 The book compares itself to series like Percy Jackson and Narnia and, while I feel young readers of these novels would also like the Pennymores, older readers are less likely to find it appealing。 The character depictions and action seem firmly entrenched within the middle-grade age range。 I would recommend it for these readers (and their parents) that enjoy a slower plot with dynamic characters and lots of fun, magical details。 I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher on net-galley。 。。。more

Oh。 Mylanta。 This book was SO good。 I can’t even!I loved reading something entirely different from my norm, and found myself immersed in the world and story quite quickly。 The worldbuilding was fantastic (and to a level I’ve not seen in some time–really since Harry Potter)。The read was a bit denser than I expected for a middle-grade read–if I can continue with Harry Potter references, it’d probably be on par with Order of the Phoenix。 🙂 I’m surprised it clocks in at under 400 pages! The Pennymore sisters certainly know how to take on an adventure! I greatly enjoyed reading about this feisty group of girls as they navigate the truth behind their brother's disappearance。 With both lighthearted and more serious parts, this story keeps the readers interested。I do think however, that it may be a bit too long to keep younger readers interested。 While the trio was well written and fleshed out, the other characters were not。 The plot goes on too many tangents, causing the story to The Pennymore sisters certainly know how to take on an adventure! A fun-filled magical adventure following the Pennymore sisters and their quest to find out the truth behind their brother's disappearance。 It's charming and whimsical in parts, but also has a darker side as the sisters face various perils and secrets。 The best part of the book is the central trio of the sisters, fun, firstly, and powerful female characters to inspire young readers。 The other characters aren't fleshed out quite as well, and the storyline regarding the big bad is a little confusin A fun-filled magical adventure following the Pennymore sisters and their quest to find out the truth behind their brother's disappearance。 It's charming and whimsical in parts, but also has a darker side as the sisters face various perils and secrets。 The best part of the book is the central trio of the sisters, fun, firstly, and powerful female characters to inspire young readers。 The other characters aren't fleshed out quite as well, and the storyline regarding the big bad is a little confusing at times。 Overall, it's an entertaining read with hints of the likes of Harry Potter and A Pinch of Magic。 It's a tad too long and the plot spreads out in too many directions leaving a lot unanswered。 It's worth a read for fans of the genre, and I'd happily read a sequel。 Thanks to Net Galley for providing me with an advance copy of the novel。 。。。more

All of the children in my extended family are (or aspire to be ) confident and enthusiastic readers。 This book really spoke to them。 The older ones enjoyed the book and library references, the younger just enjoyed the story。 A really good magical read for a family to enjoy together。

The Pennymores – the Curse of the Invisible Quill by Eric KoesterUgh, the names。 Getting this out of the way first。 I was all set to love this but I have issues with names。 In the case of this story, after I saw “Lady Julie” I almost stopped reading。 If you are writing fantasy and trying to construct a world, I ask you to please use names that don’t sound like ones you’d hear during roll call at Twin Forks Middle School。That aside – as difficult as it was for me to keep going with the certain kn The Pennymores – the Curse of the Invisible Quill by Eric KoesterUgh, the names。 Getting this out of the way first。 I was all set to love this but I have issues with names。 In the case of this story, after I saw “Lady Julie” I almost stopped reading。 If you are writing fantasy and trying to construct a world, I ask you to please use names that don’t sound like ones you’d hear during roll call at Twin Forks Middle School。That aside – as difficult as it was for me to keep going with the certain knowledge that I was going to be annoyed by these names – the story is fun, the middle grade reader of today won’t notice the names, and the plot works。There are a lot of really nice touches for the reader who loves books, stories, libraries。 My favorite thing about this was the use of things like the Serifs, the Plumes, and all the other writing and reading references。 The Illiterates were a nice touch – given that most middle grade readers I know have an awareness of current events, I think they’d see parallels between them and a growing sector of our current society。The story starts with four royal children – the Pennymores – who live in Everly。 The youngest – a boy named Riley – is kidnapped, and this is where the story picks up steam。 Making reading and writing tangibly and explicitly magic works as well as it does in other similar fantasies, and I could see using this story in a curriculum along with books by Anna James, Cornelia Funke, and Kate Saunders。There’s a lot to enjoy here, and I won’t spoil the story itself by offering up the plot。 The pace is good, and the details don’t weight the story down。 The fantasy elements are all there save the names, and while the reader might see in advance how the story will unfold, it’s not unsatisfying; instead, it’s comfortable and familiar。Ultimately, the two things that felt clunky weee the names and – occasionally – the prose。 There were some container ship sentences, but this wasn’t a constant problem。 Most of the instances that stood out seemed to be places where Koester felt the need to explain something a reader would have taken for granted。 I never did get over the names, and wish an editor had put the kibosh on several – Aven, Parker, and Riley, but especially Lady Julie; to be fair, at least nobody was named Jinger。There are enough original elements to this straightforward quest fantasy that it’s a lot of fun to read, and – in spite of my absolute outrage over the names – I look forward to recommending it friends with middle grade readers。I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Reading this book with my 8 year old son and we’re both loving it! Built around a fascinating and thought-provoking premise - what does a world where writing is banned look like? My 8 year old asks to read it every night, and I’m happy to oblige! Lots of adventure and magic! If you love Harry Potter, you’ll love The Pennymores。 Can’t wait for the rest of the series!

I love this kind of book - a fun story that I can share with my young nieces and nephews。 But I often wonder if there are any new ideas left。 Eric found a new angle and created a delightful world that I saw clearly in my mind’s eye。 This book had characters that I fell in love with and rooted for and once it got going, it was impossible to put down。 If you’re a fan of this genre it’s a must read。 I look forward to book two!

The Pennymores felt like I was watching a movie or a play while I read it -- the dialogue, pacing, action, character depth, and richness of the places in this world drew me into the world like in books such as Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and Narnia。  But the uniqueness of this story was in the strong, unique sisters (and the fun, funny, complex dynamics between them) plus a magical world around writing -- reimagining how a quill can be used instead of a magic wand, and how inkwells, books, and The Pennymores felt like I was watching a movie or a play while I read it -- the dialogue, pacing, action, character depth, and richness of the places in this world drew me into the world like in books such as Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and Narnia。  But the uniqueness of this story was in the strong, unique sisters (and the fun, funny, complex dynamics between them) plus a magical world around writing -- reimagining how a quill can be used instead of a magic wand, and how inkwells, books, and paper can become tools to create magic。  It's a fun read with complexity throughout - something that was an adventure, but with unique stories, surprises, and twists that set up a series。  Excited to hear more stories of the Pennymores and any writer will love to see all the fun references throughout the story! 。。。more

It's always wonderful to find a book where line after line, you can feel the writer's love and care for the written word, and The Pennymores is definitely that kind of book。 Similarly to the Inkheart trilogy, this story hooks you from the start, immerses you into its world, and fills you with the childlike wonder that can only be found in fantasy and books。 The Pennymores is a wonderful adventure full of vibrant and fun characters and the most magical sort of magic there is: words。 It's always wonderful to find a book where line after line, you can feel the writer's love and care for the written word, and The Pennymores is definitely that kind of book。 Similarly to the Inkheart trilogy, this story hooks you from the start, immerses you into its world, and fills you with the childlike wonder that can only be found in fantasy and books。 The Pennymores is a wonderful adventure full of vibrant and fun characters and the most magical sort of magic there is: words。 。。。more

My son (8 years old) loved this book’s creative take on magic and the power in writing。 He especially liked the characters and found himself relating to them and the world they live in。 He thought the unique role of the quill was really creative。 He’s already asked if there will be more stories featuring the Pennymore’s for him to read! This is a particularly great read for younger fantasy readers。 Kids who love Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and How to Train Your Dragon will love it。

I read the Pennymores to my 6-year-old and 4-year-old, with the oldest reading over my shoulder。 When reading Harry Potter and similar books, I can’t keep both kids’ attention without the illustrated versions。 The Pennymores is the only story that keeps them tuned in with words alone。 They asked for the Pennymores every night until we finished it and, needless to say, that didn’t take long! Eric Koester's The Pennymores and the Curse of the Invisible Quill feels like everything 10-12-year-old me needed。In a story that intersects the power of the written word and friendship, The Pennymores is a fresh take on the classic adventure tale。 I particularly enjoyed the power the four siblings unleash in finding the truth together - like a sort of Charmed meets Frodo-Sam dynamic。 And as in the comparatives above, the journey is complex, full of a murky past, strained allegiances, and haunti Eric Koester's The Pennymores and the Curse of the Invisible Quill feels like everything 10-12-year-old me needed。In a story that intersects the power of the written word and friendship, The Pennymores is a fresh take on the classic adventure tale。 I particularly enjoyed the power the four siblings unleash in finding the truth together - like a sort of Charmed meets Frodo-Sam dynamic。 And as in the comparatives above, the journey is complex, full of a murky past, strained allegiances, and haunting secrets。 All while Aven, Riley, Parker, and Quinn learn to lean into their unique talents and newly discovered magic to save writing as we know it and amend the fractures, fear split into the land。 But what truly elevates the Pennymore's story is the emphasis on not just their magic - casting charms, wielding enchanted objects - but the magic of storytelling。 This one is for you: fans of Rules for Stealing Stars, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe。 。。。more
